The animals on our farm: Nana, the cats and the birds
By CabanaLanz · 08/10/2026
At CabanaLanz you won’t be alone. We share the farm with Nana, a donkey with a very special story, three cats (two very friendly and one very shy) and hundreds of birds that live among our trees. Here’s the family, so you know who you’ll meet.
Nana, the donkey

Nana is a rescued donkey. She came to us after being mistreated and, at first, she was terrified of people: as soon as anyone came near, she backed away.
With time, patience and love she has changed enormously. Today she lets people stroke her and comes over to say hello, although she’s still getting used to people. For us, seeing her like this is one of the most beautiful things this farm has given us.
Can I feed her? Yes: a carrot is her favourite treat. You can also stroke her. We just ask you to approach slowly and calmly, and that children always do so with an adult. If one day she’d rather be left alone, let her be: she’ll come back on her own.
Her paddock is right next to the cabins, so you’ll see her every day.
The cats: Charlie, Michi and Blanquita

Charlie and Michi are the friendliest: as soon as they see someone new, they come over. They may well keep you company on the terrace for a while, or you’ll find them wandering between the cabins.
Blanquita is the complete opposite: very shy, she never comes close. If you manage to spot her, consider yourself lucky.
One request: there’s no need to buy them food. They have their own and are well looked after; a bit of fuss is more than enough for them.
The birds
With so many trees, the farm has become home to hundreds of birds. You won’t see them one by one but everywhere, and you’ll hear them from your cabin. It’s one of the things that most surprises people who arrive thinking Lanzarote is all volcanoes and rock.
Why we look after them like this
For us, the animals aren’t decoration: they’re part of the family and of what CabanaLanz is. Nana’s story sums it up. An animal that has been afraid of people can learn to trust again if it’s treated with respect and without rushing. That’s what we try to do with them, and what we ask of everyone who comes to the farm.
Frequently asked questions
Do the animals come into the cabins?
Nana lives in her paddock. The cats roam freely around the farm and come over to say hello, but they don’t need food from outside.
Is it a good place to stay with children?
Yes. Children love giving Nana a carrot and playing with the cats. We only ask that they’re with an adult when they go near Nana.
